Wash your linen dress in cool water, never hot. Hand wash or machine wash on a gentle cycle with a short spin. Air dry and iron while slightly damp. See our linen dresses for care details.

Can I machine wash my linen dress?

Yes, you can. Set your machine to a gentle or delicate programme with cool water and a short spin cycle. Cold water helps the fibres keep their shape and prevents shrinkage. Use a mild detergent, ideally one without bleach or optical brighteners, and do not overload the drum. If your dress has embroidery or is a looser weave, turning it inside out and putting it in a mesh laundry bag adds extra protection. The one rule, whatever you choose, is no hot water at any stage.

Should I hand wash instead?

Hand washing gives you more control, especially if you are washing one piece. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water, add a small amount of detergent, and submerge the dress. Gently squeeze the fabric through the water, do not rub or wring it. Rinse with fresh cool water until the soap is gone, then press the water out without twisting. Roll the dress in a clean towel to absorb leftover moisture before hanging it to dry. Both methods work well for linen; pick the one that fits your routine.

How do I dry linen without shrinking it?

Air drying is the safest way. Hang the dress on a padded hanger or lay it flat on a drying rack away from direct sunlight, which can fade the colour over time. Do not put your linen dress in a tumble dryer on high heat, because that shrinks the fibres and sets in creases. If you must use a dryer, choose the lowest heat setting and take the dress out while it is still slightly damp. You can also dry it on a line in the shade. The humidity in Bali means it might take longer, but the fabric will stay soft and keep its size.

Does linen need ironing?

Not always, but it helps if you prefer a crisp look. Iron the dress while it is still damp, or spritz it with water first. Use a medium to hot iron setting, and press on the wrong side of the fabric to avoid shine. For the seams and any folds, steam works well. If you are happy with the natural linen creases, you can skip ironing entirely. The texture is part of what makes linen feel relaxed. Our own linen dresses are designed for that lived-in look, so you can decide how much you want to smooth them.

How to keep linen looking good in Bali's humidity

Store your linen dress in a cool, dry place where air can move around it. Avoid plastic bins or sealed bags, because they trap moisture and can cause mildew. A breathable cotton or muslin garment bag is better if you need to cover it. Let the dress air out between wears, especially after a day in the humidity, before folding or hanging it. If you sweat into the fabric, rinse it with cold water or hand wash it the same day. Linen does not need washing after every wear, but it does like being kept dry.

Common questions

Does linen shrink when washed?

It can, if you use hot water or a high heat dryer. Washing in cold or lukewarm water and air drying keeps the fibres stable. Some shrinkage can happen on the first wash, but it usually stops after that if you follow the care instructions. For more details, check our FAQ.

Can I use fabric softener on linen?

It is better not to. Fabric softener coats the fibres and reduces linen's natural ability to wick moisture and breathe. A splash of white vinegar in the rinse cycle can soften the fabric without leaving residue, or just let the linen soften on its own through regular washing.

Can I put my linen dress in the dryer briefly?

Yes, on the lowest heat setting, but take it out while it is still damp. Line drying or flat drying is safer for the fabric's long-term condition. If you do use the dryer, remove the dress promptly to avoid deep-set wrinkles.

How do I get stains out of a linen dress?

Treat stains as soon as you spot them. Dab (do not rub) the spot with a little cold water and a drop of mild detergent, then rinse. For tougher stains, soak the whole dress in cool water for 15 minutes before washing. Avoid bleach, which weakens the fibres.

How often should I wash my linen dress?

Only when it needs it. You can often wear linen a few times between washes, airing it out in between. A quick rinse or a hang in the fresh air is usually enough to freshen it.
