Our Fabrics: Linen, Cotton Knit and TENCEL Modal

2 minute read

The fabrics behind Aline My Label: linen and cotton knit for clothing, TENCEL Modal for intimates and cotton rayon for sarongs, made by hand in Bali.

Aloysia High Waist Linen Short, handmade in Bali

Aline My Label uses four fabrics, all plant based and all made up by hand in Bali: linen and cotton knit for clothing, TENCEL Modal for intimates, and cotton rayon for sarongs. Each one is chosen for hot, humid weather. See the linen range and the cotton knit range.

Why linen and cotton knit for Bali?

Bali is humid and warm. Linen breathes and feels airy, which is why we use it for dresses, pants, shorts and tops. Our linen is crinkle linen. Cotton knit is soft with some stretch, which makes it good for tops, skirts and dresses that sit close to the body. Both are easy to care for: hand wash or machine wash, just never in hot water. Everything is made by hand in small runs. You can see the cotton knit pieces and the linen pieces on the shop.

How does TENCEL Modal work for intimates?

TENCEL Modal is a fibre made from wood pulp by Lenzing. It moves moisture off the skin faster than cotton and stays soft against it. Our bralettes, briefs and thongs are made from it for that reason. See the TENCEL™ underwear and bras collection for every style.

Linen or TENCEL Modal for hot weather?

In short, linen is for outer layers that need airflow, and TENCEL Modal is for next-to-skin pieces that need to stay soft and dry. We compare the two in detail in Linen vs TENCEL Modal for Hot Weather.

What is the sarong fabric?

Our sarongs are cotton rayon, handmade in Bali, in floral and ocean prints. They work as beach wraps and cover-ups. See the current prints in the sarong collection.

How is the clothing made?

Everything is designed and made in Bali, in small runs, by hand. We describe how our clothes are made rather than claiming a certification we do not hold. Ask us anything about a specific piece. Because runs are small, a style may come back after it sells out and may not, so if you see something you like, it is worth ordering while it is available. Learn more on our about page.

How do I choose between linen and cotton knit?

Linen has more structure, which suits dresses and wide-leg pants. Cotton knit is softer, stretchier and more fitted, which suits close-fitting tops and bodycon dresses such as the Cedar Knit Bodycon Dress. Both are comfortable in the heat, so it comes down to the texture and fit you prefer. Each product page says exactly which fabric a piece uses.

Common questions

What fabrics do you use?

Linen, cotton knit, TENCEL Modal and cotton rayon. Linen and cotton knit are for clothing, TENCEL Modal for intimates, and cotton rayon for sarongs.

How do I wash them?

Hand wash or machine wash, whichever you prefer. The one rule is no hot water, for every fabric. Each product page lists the same under Care.

What size should I take?

Measure your bust, waist and hips with a soft tape. Clothing and intimates use different charts, so check the size guide. If you are between sizes, send us your measurements and we will tell you which to pick.

Can I see the clothes in person?

Yes, at four boutiques in Bali: Doo Moo Living and Alala Spa & Boutique in Amed, Kru Bali in Uluwatu, and Awakened Dreamers in Ubud and Canggu. Stock varies, so message us before you visit.
